MIMA I CAPTAIN FRANS
How much can you leave out of a Masterpiece and not lose its essence? This is the question that inspired the entire collection, and this exploration among the Grand Masters would be incomplete without a work by Rembrandt van Rijn. How do you choose from such a vast collection as his? Logically it became the Night Watch, the most famous piece of all.
The original is inconceivably huge, dominating an entire Rijksmuseum gallery wall (3.79m x 4.54M) and weighing a staggering 337kg. Studio Noor’s signature minimalism could not bear that much weight, so she decided to work with a cut-out of the most central character. And so enters Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, the leader of one of the three Amsterdam militias and a ‘burgemeester’ (Dutch for ‘mayor’) of the day.
Despite reducing the scope of the subject, it was still a painstaking experience to do justice to this work in minimalistic style. The work cannot be easily captured or translated, yet Frans is still easily recognized in this reinterpretation. The aspect of Frans’ physique, the detail in the clothing, the contrast between the white collar and the deep, dark suit set off by the crimson sash. Nothing is left to chance.
