MIMA I JOSEPH - THE POST WORKER
It was love at first sight when Noor first came face to face with the portrait of the Postmaster (1889). She found herself moved by his unruly beard enlivened with wild, course brush strokes and a rich color palette. In life, there was a close friendship between Vincent and Joseph which is palpable in the sparkling use of color and the vibrant summer flowers.
Joseph Roulin was the postmaster in Arles, where Van Gogh often came to send his paintings to his brother, Theo. It was through these frequent interactions that the two men built their friendship. Vincent painted several works of the Roulin family including six of Joseph himself in a short time.
If the original work is a bit too wild for you, then this minimal version is for you. Fun fact: The small red triangle over his right shoulder is included to represent the summer poppies. This stunning shade is also reflected in MIMA Vincent’s beard, making different works across MIMA easy to mix and match across color and size.
