MIMA I FRIDA
The iconic Frida Kahlo, the Mexican folk painter with German roots. Powerhouse. Warrior. Feminist. Groundbreaking, yet disarming. Of all the women who could be celebrated as part of the MIMA Collection, no one deserves it more than Frida.
Her original self-portrait (1940), a masterpiece full of symbolism, features a collar of thorns and a hummingbird. The thorns around her neck tell the story of the pain she had suffered in her life which contrasts the hummingbird intended to represent hope. Just like the bird on the canvas, this reimagination of her masterpiece flutters into your soul and wins your heart.
Studio Noor is as irreverent as the woman who inspired this piece. Frida is the broadest interpretation within the MIMA collection. The colors come partly from the original work featured alongside colors drawn from her other works. Despite the minimal construction using only 21 colored panes and thanks to its central composition, the imagery remains bold and powerful. Just like Frida.
