MIMA I The Swan
The original Threatened Swan (ca. 1650) can be admired on its large, imposing canvas (1.44m x 1.71m) in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. One of the most famous works by the Dutch painter, Jan Asselijn, its full power can only be experienced up close and in-person.
The angry swan spreads her wings to defend her nest against threats, a dog in this instance. Her feathers catch the light from behind. Wings aglow, the translucent white silhouettes form a beautiful contrast with the blue-gray background. According to stories, the city of Amsterdam lies in the background for the careful viewer to explore. Can you see it?
Studio Noor chose this work not because of its historical significance, but through a subtle personal connection. Her husband and sons have the surname Zwaan, the Dutch word for ‘swan’. As such, this final piece of the original MIMA collection is near and dear to her heart. Since its creation, a sixth Minimal Master has been added.
